Sixteen years after Marcus Aurelius's death, Rome suffers under corrupt twin emperors Caracalla and Geta. Lucius Verus lives peacefully in Numidia with his wife Arishat. General Marcus Acacius leads the Roman army to conquer the kingdom, killing Arishat and enslaving survivors including Lucius.

Taken to Rome as a prisoner, Lucius is forced into gladiatorial combat. He adopts the name Hanno to conceal his true identity as Lucilla's son. Former slave Macrinus purchases Lucius for his gladiator stable, promising him a chance to kill Acacius if he wins enough battles.
